Money in your pocket! Be Sure to File for Your STAR Abatement
If you've never filed for the STAR abatement for your apartment (most likely if you bought within the last year), you must file by Dec. 31, 2008. (Filing by this date qualifies you for abatements starting in 2009.) You only need to file ONCE so this applies to new owners or those who never filed before.

Notes about STAR:
- IF YOU OWN MORE THAN 1 PROPERTY: If you own more than one property, you can only have STAR benefits on your primary residence. This is the home you live in for most of the year typically, the place where you vote and where your car is registered.
- IF YOU MOVE: If you receive Basic STAR benefits and move, you must notify the STAR Unit to cancel the benefit on your old home and apply for STAR on your new primary residence. Otherwise, Basic STAR continues on your old home, and your new application could be denied because you cannot have STAR on two properties.
- IF THERE IS MORE THAN ONE PROPERTY OWNER: If you co-own a property, all the owners must apply for STAR benefits together. However, only one owner must use the property as his or her primary residence to qualify for STAR.
